Funny Valentine’s Day Cards

Valentine's Day is tomorrow. Are you looking forward to it? We've noted before how stationary and letter writing seems obsolete, but sometimes we're reminded of how nice it is when we receive a letter in the mail or see pretty stationary, and how it should be used more often. We also don't tend to send a lot of cards to people--it is so much easier to send a text or an email--but it is a nice, thoughtful gesture. We've found some funny Valentine's Day cards that we wanted to share--it's a … [Read more...]

Writing Prompts

It's great when the creativity flows, and every word you type on the page is brilliant, but as everyone knows, this isn't always easy. Sometimes everyone needs a little help getting their creative juices pumping, and sometimes writing prompts are a good way to jumpstart our writing. Even if it's not a story we were planning on writing, it gets us to write something and it gets us to think outside the box and getting unstuck. We've included a few fun ones below that Isabel has used in the … [Read more...]

Here’s Gazing At You, Michael Bey

Film Director Michael Bey recently walked off a stage in embarrassment during what was supposedly a talk/promo for a Samsung TV. It's easy to feel empathy for him, because really, who can't relate to the embarrassment of wanting to walk away when facing a crowd that is waiting for you to be inspiring, brilliant or at least informative? But mixed in with empathy is also the nagging question: "Why couldn't he handle facing people to talk about a TV?" The teleprompter was supposedly not working, … [Read more...]

Reflections on the end of another year

2013 has been an interesting year. One main thing that we are very happy and proud of is that we completed and published our debut novel, Stargazing from Nowhere, we re-designed this blog and put up a completely new one (the one for our novel). Other events that we would rather not have dealt with include a major flood in our basement (doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it has taken six months to get things back to normal and it’s still not totally completed), as well as some family health … [Read more...]

Getting into the Christmas spirit

Neither one of us are yet fully in the Christmas spirit and it's already December 19th! The flood we had this past July has taken a lot of our attention, so it's pretty much all we've been doing when we haven't been working, and are only now getting fully settled. Everything in our basement is done except the warm fuzzy decorating which will have to be done here and there since to do everything all at once would be way too overwhelming. It was pretty overwhelming already, so at least now the … [Read more...]

Christmas by Lamplight

For anyone getting nostalgic for an old fashioned Christmas, taking a trip to a Victorian village can be warmly satisfying and help get you into the Christmas spirit. Black Creek Pioneer Village is a local historical site that holds a Christmas by Lamplight event for three weekends in December. It's always well attended by families as there are some activities for both adults and kids to partake in, but mostly it's a time to enjoy the Christmas spirit in a small Canadian village. As you walk … [Read more...]

The Fado

{Image Courtesy of Last Fm} Amalia Rodrigues was known as the "Queen of the Fado," and sung beautiful, haunting and mesmerizing music. The fado is known as the Portuguese version of the blues and dates back to the 1820s. As kids, when our mom and grandparents would play it, we didn't really appreciate it, but do now as adults, especially after having seen it performed in Lisbon (it's very theatrical and the performers will not begin singing until everyone in the audience stops talking and stops … [Read more...]

Feminine Office Ideas

While our office isn't as bad as it was a few weeks ago, we are still working to get it to be a fully-functional, visually appealing and comfortable office space. We've pretty much changed it completely from what it was (we had a lot of mismatched furniture, oversized couches and IKEA desks that were really dated and no longer as functional for us), which was unexpected but since we were flooded, we had little choice. It's kind of fun to start from scratch (and a tad overwhelming!), and while we … [Read more...]

Afternoon Tea

Coincidentally we both a rough day at work recently. The problem with rough days at work are that they often follow you home and they stay with you all night, into the next day and linger for who knows how long. Instead of wallowing in the petty details that arose throughout and were really, in the scheme of things, insignificant, we decided to shake off all the bad feelings that came up as a result of the bad day. Now the problem with living in the same city for so long is that you … [Read more...]
