There are many women who are naturally rebellious and constant rule-breakers, there are also those who break them occasionally, and then there are those who never break them at all. Breaking rules can be fun, and at times, completely necessary. It’s important to know when to follow your instincts and to do what’s best for you when you’re not hurting anyone else, even if that does mean ruffling a few feathers when breaking other people’s rules.

For this week’s Just Because series, we’ve focused on some pieces of jewellery that we love. We’ve sometimes been afraid of piling on too much jewellery and having a cluttered and confused look, so we both often opt for wearing pieces that are simple but pretty nonetheless.

There are only so many times a person can have toast and eggs for breakfast. Many people often lack the time and the energy it takes to come up with new ideas for a healthy and quick breakfast, so I wanted to share with you what I’ve recently found to be an amazing breakfast food that is so good for you, tastes good and is really quick to make.

I came across Joy McCarthy’s recipe from Joyous Health, and have been experimenting with a few of her recipes and have not been disappointed with any of them. The Apple Maple Quinoa Porridge has become a morning staple, and when I didn’t have it for a few days, I began craving it, which was a bit of a surprise–how many people do you know who crave quinoa?

It might seem like a little bit more work than simply toasting a bagel and buttering it, but it’s not a huge amount of work and the few extra minutes it does entail, are totally worth it.

Aside from the taste (which is great), there are numerous health benefits to this breakfast bowl including balancing your blood sugar (from the quinoa), and boosting your brain function (thanks to the cinnamon), as well as others. This quote reminds us of William Goldman’s book, Which Lie Did I Tell? More Adventures in the Screen Trade. The title of his book is taken from a comment made by a certain Hollywood producer who had told so many lies, that he didn’t know which of his lies he had told, never mind whether he had lied or not, at least that’s what Goldman mentioned at an industry talk.

It’s always a good idea to tell the truth. Mark Twain said so.

I’ve mentioned on this blog before how much I love make-up, so in today’s post, I’m showing you my make-up table, so you can see for yourselves how this is true. I was feeling overwhelmed by how my make-up was organized (or disorganized), so I bought some Martha Stewart trays, and used them to divide and store my make-up within the drawers. After my latest MAC splurge, it’s been really helpful to have these organized in this way.

It’s mid-winter break (and it’s March Break here) and that means that many people will be heading south this week. We won’t be visiting a beach this coming week, but here are some pictures from a previous vacation we took to Cuba. For anyone who doesn’t know, Canadians flock to Cuba the way Americans flock to Hawaii.

The sad truth is that not all eye creams are equal. And you can’t really use your regular face cream on your eye area and expect great results because that area is so sensitive and fragile that it needs its own moisturizer. When we skip out on using eye cream, we notice, and probably so do other people because the skin around and below our eyes gets dry and tired. We’ve tried so many creams, and we’ve found one that we both really like. Cellular Eye Contour Cream by La Prairie is light but dense, and provides luxurious moisture and when we use it regularly, no one says “You look so tired today.”

Talent is something most of us can recognize, at least in the areas of our expertise and interests, but it is something that is often difficult to cultivate. It’s actually a topic that’s always fascinated us.

The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle does a really solid job of explaining how talent develops, using interesting case studies and simple science.

What’s really cool about this book, in addition to the easy-going style that it’s written in considering the complex idea that it’s tackling, is that the author breaks down the factors contributing to talent, unravelling the mystery of how someone becomes talented in their field and it has a lot to do with practice which creates myelin. According to Coyle, “Some scientists believe this myelin building through repeated activity is what separates the masses from the great athletes. The athlete’s neuronal pathways for their specific skills have been turned into superhighways.”

The book certainly presents an interesting argument of nurture over nature with regards to talent.
