Who is Alice Hoffman?
As soon as we finished Alice Hoffman’s novel, The Invisible Hour, we researched more of Hoffman’s work and were reminded that she is the author of several books that centre around mystery and magic, including Practical Magic, which was turned into a Hollywood movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in 1998.

And if you haven’t seen that movie in a while, or ever, we highly recommend you have a movie night with the amazing women in your life and watch it. While the movie version is significantly different from the novel, it still carries the essence of what Hoffman’s work is all about. As Hoffman herself states:

Hoffman’s stories are very much rooted in magic and the unknown, and while she’s incorporated these elements into The Invisible Hour, she’s also incorporated time-travel skillfully.

This lifeline is what helps her to gather the courage to live life beyond the confines of what she’s been born into. When Mia travels through time, she meets and falls in love with Nathaniel Hawthorne, author of The Scarlet Letter, where she has the opportunity to alter history or leave the past as it was meant to unfold.
